About Us

Who We Are

For nearly 150 years, Mitchellville First Congregational Church has graced the corner of 3rd St and Park Ave in Mitchellville. We are a growing congregation, made up of members young and old who worship together and support one another as we grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our services blend traditional and contemporary elements as we seek to honor and glorify God in our worship.

What We Believe

Mitchellville First Congregational Church believes the Bible is the inspired revelation of God to humanity and the authoritative rule of faith and conduct. We embrace the foundational Christian truths expressed in the ancient creeds of the Church, including the Trinity, the lordship of Jesus Christ, salvation by faith alone, the work of the Holy Spirit, the resurrection, and the unity of believers. While we do not seek to define every doctrinal position, we look to Scripture as our final authority in matters of faith and practice, seeking to understand and apply its truth faithfully.

“The purpose of this church shall be to establish and maintain a place for the worship of Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, to provide for Christian fellowship for those of like faith, and to assume our share of responsibility and the privilege of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ by all Scriptural means.”

Church By-Laws, I.3, “To Worship, Fellowship, and Propagate”

How Our Church Is Governed

Our church is governed congregationally, under the headship of Jesus Christ and the authority of Scripture, with members sharing in the life and leadership of the church. The congregation calls its pastor and deacons, who serve together on the Church Council to provide leadership, oversee the work of the church, and help guide its direction. All church members are invited to participate in Council meetings, contributing their perspectives and taking part in the shared work of the congregation. We seek to discern God’s direction together through prayer, Scripture, and the leading of the Holy Spirit, recognizing that the whole congregation shares in this responsibility. As a Congregational church, we recognize the autonomy of the local congregation and its accountability to Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church.

“…One of the keys to Congregational church government is this, it is not that we have a majority rule situation. We have a God rule situation and it is all of us together who pray… to try to understand what God wants this church to do… That God would show us collectively what He wants us to do. Because when all of us begin to see it together, we will know that God’s Spirit is leading us and we will know that He is blessing us and sending us in the right direction.”
